KGO-AM, located in San Francisco, is one of the major market AM stations that were acquired by Citadel from ABC radio and then purchased by Cumulus.
True to their reputation of focusing on cost cutting, the Dickey family from Atlanta (who now run Citadel after it was acquired by their company) is firing all of the talk show hosts except Ronn Owens.
KGO is a liberal talk station in a very liberal city that is known for political activism – and a city council that thinks everything in the world is within their jurisdictio to dictate how things should work. They have been involved in the past trying to tell radio stations who their hosts can or can’t be (See: Michael Savage).
Mr. Dickey is about to learn that major market stations and their listeners are much different than in small town USA.
Cumulus also owns KSFO-AM, the Conservative station carrying mostly the Premiere lineup – Limbaugh, Hannity, Coast to Coast along with TRN’s Laura Ingrahan and Citadel’s Mark Levin and John Batchelor (now called Cumulus Media)
On the heels of Clear Channel’s announcement flipping Green960 to Glenn Beck, I have a very strong suspicion that KSFO’s lineup is leaving Cumulus to go to Clear Channel – and may not end in San Francisco.
Clear Channel’s problem is it doesn’t have a viable AM station in Detroit (WJR), Chicago (WLS) and New York (WABC)
KGO-AM’s remaining non-fired host Ron Owne is spending today playing random obscure music.
KGO about two years ago announced it was “going green” by installing solar panels at its transmitter site. Right about now, I suspect an “Occupy KGO” moveent is descending on the KGO parking lot.
LOL, Good ol’ cumulus. Man, they did that here is southwest Virginia bought 7 stations, fired everyone except like three people. Now the sports talk is crap, the hip-hop station is crap(It was crap before) . The talk station runs Dave ramsey from 9am to 12pm then Rush and Hannity then Dave ramsey again, for half hour until the go off the air at 6:30pm. All weekend its Dave Ramsey,
One station plays easy listening elevator music, but the same 12 songs over and over on AM but the wattage is so low, they may as well turn it off.
The fifth one they sold to a local university and it plays NPR 24 hrs but drops its power at night so you can’t hear it.
The Country Music station plays some computer satellite show in the evenings now, It use to be local people.
And the Rock station is a joke, unless you like Def Leppardover and over again.
They sold one station off to a local guy and he is playing BlueGrass music and its very popular. They have local personalities 990 am WNRV.
Cumulus LOL
