Say what ???
During testing, the guest host of Dirk Van’s FirstLight show ended with saying “This is NBC Radio”.
Dirk Van’s show is syndicated by Dial Global, which now owns Westwood One (Jim Bohannon’s America in the Morning was also a Westwood One show).
NBC Radio of course dominated US Radio during the Golden Age of Radio, and was very active up into the era of TalkNet with Sally Jesse Raphael and Bruce Williams.
After GE bought RCA in 1987 (and NBC), they sold off the radio business to Westwood One. Westwood One would also absorb the Mutual Broadcasting System. Now Dial Global owns all of those branches of radio history.
At least Trademark wise, NBC is “owned” by NBC Universal, which is now owned (51%) by Comcast. The trademark covers both Radio and TV – presumably, Westwood One owned the right to use the “NBC Radio” name.
Dial Global continues to serve up “NBC Radio News” broadcasts anchored by NBC News personnel, including Luke Russert. WOR in New York uses some of these. I remember seeing recently that the Dirk Van show is continuing to air under the “NBC Radio” brand.
I was doing nights on WOOD in Grand Rapids when TalkNet debuted with Sally and Bruce. My fondest memory involving NBC Radio at WOOD is listening to Don Pardo host the news and actuality feeds that the public never heard. “Stations, stand by faw cut one, in threeee, twoooo, onnnne…” If I ever find a working reel-to-reel tape deck, maybe I’ll find out if I ever recorded one of those.
