In 1971, Soviet drillers caused the collapse of an underground cavern, which swallowed the drilling rig. Natural gas was coming from the crater, and it was lit on fire to flare off the gas. 40 years later it is still burning.
This has some similarities to the Centralia Pennsylvania coal mine fire, which has been burning since 1962 – there is realistically no way to put out the fire.
There’s GOT to be a marketing opportunity for Jiffy Pop in here somewhere… 🙂
