Perhaps I sensed change was in the air. The recent post about “Why do we have Top of the News on Radio?” was done in part because I recently started tracking which top of the hour news service each station is using. Here were the results so far:
+------------------+-------+ | company | Count | +------------------+-------+ | Fox Radio News | 30 | | ABC News | 19 | | CBS News | 9 | | CNN News | 6 | | Salem Radio News | 4 | | AP Radio News | 2 | | IRN News | 1 | | Bloomberg News | 1 | +------------------+-------+
Yesterday, CNN announced it is leaving the radio news business effective April 1st. CNN used to offer a 24 hr/day radio news feed, which was only picked up by a handful of stations and that died several years ago. Now CNN is getting out of the radio news business entirely.
Dial Global has been the distributor of CNN’s news. What they plan to do is create a new product bringing back the NBC News name to radio. Dirk Van’s morning show is the only show that has continued to carry the NBC News name, which Dial Global inherited from Westwood One, which acquired the rights when GE bought NBC and decided it wasn’t interested in being in the radio business any more.
Back in December, I had noticed that Dial Global was still using the NBC Radio name and wondered out lout if Dial Global had plans to revive the brand:
Glenn Beck – are you thinking what I’m thinking? Now would be a great time to market GBTV radio news as a formal product. I’m thinking a large number of Conservative radio stations would pick it up.
Additional information – I’ve only been gathering this information for News/Talk stations, but other types of stations also carry top of the hour news – mostly the “Full Service” old school local AM radio stations.
In general, I’ve noticed that CNN News has been carried on the stations with more so-called “Progressive” radio shows, which should not a shock if you ever listen to CNN Radio News and its blatant “spin” on the day’s events.
Since there are only a couple minutes of news, and the streaming lag makes that a moving target, data gathering goes slowly. Any interest in helping speed up the process? More ears would produce faster results.
I didn’t actually have any specific plan in mind for this – would people want to filter the stations they listen to based on which top of the hour news it carries?
Interesting, WAAV Wilmington has CNN News at top of the hour. They are Cumulus but they carry Glenn Rush, Local show, then Savage. Pretty conservative.
WTAR Norfolk use to have CNN, they went jokes, and now WNIS Norfolk has Beck and Fox news . I think they use to be CNN.
Nah, you don’t have to filter it on news service unless you want to. I like the update cause sometimes Preger and Beck won’t say whats going on during the hour. I heard on John Galt FLA last night that Rush will be retiring soon cause he is afraid of what happened to Brietbart. (Conspiracy was rampant)
yeah I’ll help, you need it posted here?

Some guy from Pennsylvania sent a box unsolicited to Rush’s house with electric wiring inside that showed up on xray. The local bomb squad was called in to check to see if it might be a dangerous package.
This morning, Glenn Beck’s building lost power when a transformer blew up.
All just unrelated events, I’m sure.
I expected a pattern that one station owner (Cumulus for instance) would carry the same news service on every station, but that turns out not to be the case. It looks like that must be a decision still made by the local program director or station management.
