Last year I placed a line in the sand to help track how food prices are changing, as there could be changing container sizes and food ingredients to mask the increases in food prices.
The purpose of the orignal post was to look at cost per 1000 calories for various types of food products. It was pricing for non-sale, highly standardized food products that don’t have large seasonal price variations or variations in quality that are hard to track.
Many of the products were unchanged in price, size of calories
Way down: Bacon
Somewhat down: Butter, Coca Cola, Jello, Ice Cream
Signfiicantly up: Oreos, Russet potatoes [seasonal], Cheese, Spaghetti Sauce, Boneless Chicken Breasts
Way Up: Kraft Marshmallows, Bananas, Hershey’s Chocolate, Beef, Fish Sticks, Canned Peas
This is one store in one place on a specific date, so not a lot of data to get a “big picture” that translates nationally, but perhaps an interesting comparison, maybe not.
