Coming to an FM station near you – zonecasting

The way advertising is sold to streaming radio listeners might have gotten people to think about this. Harris is about the only company still making top of the line commercial radio transmitters. They want to try this concept in Palm Beach as an experiment.

The basic idea is that the main FM signal will be repeated on a network of low power FM Booster. A booster is different than an FM Translator because it is on the same frequency as the main signal. A typical use would be in West Virginia where you have valleys in between high mountains and the FM signal can’t reach – so you put in a booster to fill in the gaps in coverage.

It doesn’t work well when the booster and the main signal overlap and can both be heard – since the signals have to be perfectly synchronized or they interfere with each other.

Zonecasting will use boosters to play different ads to different parts of town. Palm Beach is the perfect place for this technology. The booster on the islands where Rush Limbaugh and the Kennedy family live will hear ads from the BMW and Tesla car dealerships – and the part of town where the people live who clean the toilets of the rich people will hear ads for payday loans and taco stands. Win-win!

Given the FCC meddling already in ethnic issues, I can’t imagine the FCC encouraging “red lining” of advertising targeting it to/away from people based on their income level and ethnic affiliation.

Thankfully we still have some wealthy income earners who employ us poor people. Otherwise we would have to feed off the govenment teets. Oh wait a minute, is that the ulitmate plan?

LOL ! Oh this is going to work out well with Cumulus ! They already play commercials on top of music and news all the time.
If there was test to say you must be this tall or this smart to own a radio station, there would be no cumulus.
