WTKK-FM update

WTKK-FM was one of the pioneers doing FM conservative talk in the unlikely market of Boston. It is owned by Greater Media, a station owner with a group of interesting stations and generally seems well run.

WTKK-FM tried to hire regional host Howie Carr and wound up with only a lawsuit in return. They have had several hosts that management let go or suspended for making controversial remarks.

Jan 2nd, Conservative talk was replaced with “black music” – a black host playing the most vile hip-hop music and R&B, talking about how much he loves President Obama.

So all you white racist old men who haven’t got it yet – go screw yourselves.

They’re “stunting”.

Yesterday Howie Carr dubbed the WTKK radio station as “WEBT” saying the new format would attract only those using EBT cards. After listening for only ten minutes, I think he made a good point.

So many radio stations are going to run government paid ad spots because private sector businesses need to advertise on stations who actually have a listening audience.

I saw a quote in Tom Taylor’s newsletter from a veteran radio sales guy – he said that since 2008, 80% of local advertisers are gone.

The Jerry guy in California who used to work with Tom says Cumulus is about to unload much of its remaining sales staff, and Clear Channel has a new programming guy who is going to make significant programming changes in the next few days.

Apparently, yesterday was techno dance music day. People aren’t sure what the format will be when the wheel stops spinning. The risk here is if you don’t create buzz, you will surely have people taking the station off their car radio preselect buttons.

Sounds like today’s format is Asian Bollywood
