The Lou Grant show had an episode in which the newspaper owner’s pet poodle vanished without explanation. Eventually, the dog’s collar was found, and this led into an investigation of the “sport” of dog fighting.

What Mrs Pynchon learned was her dog had been stolen in order to “blood” fighting dogs – meaning that the dog trainer would use a small weak dog to train a larger dog how to kill and bring out its lust for blood. Once having drawn out that behavior, the dog is given increasingly stronger dogs to kill in order to test the dog’s bravery and willingness to keep fighting when it isn’t an easy victory.
