A story has been bouncing around the media the past few days – as presented by the 911 audio, the nurse was ordered by the 911 operator to perform CPR on the patient. She refused and the woman died. bad nurse, bad nursing home.
The 87 year old woman had signed a DNR (do not resuscitate) order telling the nursing home that in the event her heart stopped, she wanted to die and have no CPR performed to keep her alive. She collapsed in the dining room and someone in the room dialed 911 and so it goes.
So just how do you keep people from letting nature takes its course when someone’s body gives out and they want to die?
Some day I’m going to chat with a lawyer and ask “can you write up a living will that says I want every possible means to keep my body alive even if I have no money left and no chance of recovery”. Sometimes relatives push the living will to speed up their inheritance. Tough questions.
Valerie Harper has terminal brain cancer.
Had an opportunity to see Valerie Harper do a one person show in Hartford CT in the 1990s. I wish I had, she was always funny to me. I wish her well.
Always loved Rhoda’s sister too, Brenda aka Marge Simpson.
The OPM (Other People’s Money) is the real issue here. I have no problem keeping someone brain dead and in a coma under 24/7 care for 20 years so long as someone wants to pay for it…. and I don’t want to be mandated to buy a policy that includes those costs in my premiums. I’d rather spend my tax money hiring thousands of “earbud maids”, like lovely Rita, the meter maid, but with the focus of checking to make sure no one is listening too loud in NYC. 😉
Hey I was just checking my ID card from my new insurance company. Cheapskates. Right under “CC1s121LrBGT” it says “Do Not Resuscitate” …. AND under that it says “Allergic to all medications”. 😉
Don’t worry Art, at the current pace long term health care will become your own .45 and as they clutch after the 401ks and your own ‘unfair’ savings the .45 will become a retirement plan too!
