What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, except progressive talk

KJFK-AM in Las Vegas pulled the plug this morning on the so-called Progressive talk format

They haven’t said what’s next, just they refuse to keep losing money on the format. On the stream, I’m currently hearing a simulcast of an FM station playing Hip Hop “music”

Damn that Rush Limbaugh for destroying talk radio with his boycotts!

Will we have more LIVs (low information voters) with the Hip Hop, or with the 1230jfk? What is the DNC’s target audience? I smell a conspiracy with jfk. 😉

Radio station owners are fleeing the progressive format at an alarming rate. This kicked in just after the election when stations in Seattle, Portland, and other markets flipped to sports. My guess is that they were losing tons of money all along but resisted a format change until after November so they wouldn’t seem politically biased.

Frankly, I don’t really listen to political radio at all anymore, but there’s nothing more boring than progressive radio. Take a listen to Bill Press or Stephanie Miller some time (if you can find them) and hear them blame EVERYTHING on that evil criminal mastermind (yet simultaneously incompetent puppet figurehead) George W. Bush, well into the fifth year of the Obama administration. Nobody likes a sore winner.

There are a few progressive hosts that can be interesting – Alan Colmes and Lionel come to mind. Jay Marvin in Chicago used to be (his story has a very sad ending), Stacy Taylor, Gil Gross – what they have in common is they’ve been doing it a long time.

It’s pretty well documented that Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller got into Dial Global’s syndication based on direct funding by the Democratic Party. More than likely, the Democrats no longer see this as a useful expense, since the two party system is crumbling.

He’s not on radio, but Chris Hayes is a very smart and personable liberal. His Saturday and Sunday morning shows were a surprise shining gem in a sea of MSNBC sewage. While I don’t agree with much of what Mr Hayes believes, I enjoy watching him and his well considered views.

      • Chris Hayes is the one who said he was “uncomfortable calling fallen [American] soldiers heroes.” Very personable and quite well considered, isn’t he?

I’m not familiar with the quote, but what I have seen is that he doesn’t drop controversial ideas or opinions without explanation, in fact, it usually involves detailed discussion with 4-6 guests around a roundtable.

I think the show has been cancelled so that Chris can move to weekdays, but what I liked about the show was that it wasn’t your typical liberal vs conservative shouting match between professional paid party political operatives. In fact, most guest smile most of the time, really listen to each other speak, and actually enjoy the conversation. That to me was a rare find.
