Partly inspired by Glenn Beck’s speech, I’m mulling over exercising my 2nd amendment right living inside the City of Chicago. I have no particular desire to actually own a gun, but you never know. If the SHTF, it would be nice to have the paperwork out of the way first.

For some reason the State of Illinois has a huge backlog of applications. Generally in Illinois, the FOID card is the main requirement. It’s a $10 fee to establish your identity and let them make sure you aren’t otherwise disqualified. Illinois is the one state that still has no process at all for conceal carry. You just can’t
Chicago deliberately makes it as hard as possible. After you have the state ID card, you have to show up at person at the Chicago Police Department Headquarters at Michigan at South 35th street. You pay $100, submit two passport size photos, proof that you attended 5 hours of gun safety training (~$150) that your vision is at least 20/40, and wave a copy of the Chicago City ordinance to demonstrate you know the rules. You must have the official yellow form only available at the Chicago PD. no copies.
Once you have the FOID card and the Chicago Gun Owner permit, you can now buy a gun. It must not be a scary gun. You may only have the gun loaded while inside the interior of your home and only one gun loaded. You may not have more than one loaded gun. You may not have it in the garage and certainly not on your porch or in your yard.
Should you desire to transport your gun, it must be disassembled and in a carrying case. Any ammunition must be in a separate case.
Upon bringing the gun into the city, you then have 5 days to register the gun, with the model, serial number and specifics of how you acquired the gun. You may not register more than one handgun every 30 days.
I need to read my apartment lease again and see if it prohibits having a gun (probably so is my guess, although up until the Supreme Court decisions, it was a non issue since were no handguns in the city of Chicago, only Al Capone’s rata tata tat machine guns (Chicago people love when you say that!)
Probably initially I’ll just join the NRA and take the gun safety course. If someday, a policeman or soldier stuffs a gun in my hand and says “here, use this” I might actually know what to do. I’ll be sure to read my NRA magazine by the pool – probably a great conversation starter.
“So let me understand this – you went through all our hoops to prevent you from owning a gun, and you expect me to believe you don’t actually have a gun?”
Yes officer, that is correct. But my neighbors don’t know that.
Wow, I bet with all those restrictions to prevent a person from being able to defend themselves, gun crime must be almost non-existent in chi-town. /sarc
I especially like the part that says only one loaded gun is allowed inside your house.
Are all the lawmakers in chicago named sheila ?
The alderpeople are a very large group of people who directly micromanage the city. If you own a house and want to change how your back yard connects to the driveway, your alder person has to $ign off on the paperwork. There are 50 people on the Chicago City Council.
One of my favorite stories about my earlier time in living in Chicago involved radio. Steve and Gary were on WLUP still, and I think the “piss Christ” art thing was going on in New York. Whatever they said on air (implying that Mayor Harold Washington might be gay) motivated an art student to draw a picture of an obese Harold Washington dressed up in garters and high heels and put it on display in some display of “art” at the Art Museum. Upon hearing about this, the black members of the Chicago City council got the chief of police on the phone and demanded that he take down the painting on the basis that it was an incitement to cause riots.
Republicans don’t want to win. There is nothing wrong with Democratic politicians being gay. It’s not a slur, it is something to be proud about. Divide and conquer. Educate gay people about how deep the hatred of male homosexuals is in the black community. Constantly encourage gay activists to compare their struggle with the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s. Demand that Mexico outlaw bull fights and other forms of entertainment based on killing animals for entertainment.
I live on the $ide of a $teep hill and do not want to see my $oil eroded. Unfortunately, my town pa$$ed a law requiring permi$$ion from them before I would be allowed to remove any of my tree$ with a trunk $ize greater than $ix inche$.
When it rains now, I have an $oil ero$ion problem because I had to hire a land$scaper to remove 34 tree$ from my hill$ide yard before they grew to over $ix inch diameter.
Ditto to what you said…..and do go ahead with procurement of a personal protection device….get a high quality semi-automatic that is comfortable to hold and fire. Buy lots of spare ammo and clips too.
I was thinking about a super soaker loaded the menthos and diet coke.
16 oz limit on that diet coke. 😉
“Are all the lawmakers in chicago named sheila ?” <– That is Funny !

Whether to own a gun is actually a complicated decision. If you have a bad temper, or live with people who do, you should not have a gun. Must murders are related to domestic disputes.
On the other hand, if you carry a lot of cash, or need to spend a time in areas with high crime, maybe you should have a gun.
Awesome Art ! I had never been a member of any pro-second amendment organization. NRA got on my nerves in the 90’s as they were just pro-hunt.
Me and my brother joined this year in January, when the schumer, FeinSwine, Obo and Uncle Joe started their aggressive dis-information campaign.
I seldom ‘carry’ but I do practice often.
I hope other folks understand how the Socialist and bloomerburg are trying to take away your freedom. Gun Free zones are nothing but killing fields. A criminal that is out to kill and cause mayhem, is Only stopped when confronted by the Po Po or a armed citizen that is not afraid to protect themselves.
I support you and your endeavor Art.

You’re basically right – the “R” in NRA is Rifle and they have generally stayed on the “safe” idea that Patrick Henry wanted the second amendment so he could hunt doves on the weekend at Waldon’s pond. It’s been pretty amazing how thoroughly the country has blanketed with concealed carry laws with relatively little organized opposition
The R is definately for rifle. Not so many people want to ban rifles, and not so many people can walk down the street concealing them.
The real political action is on the non-rifle front. If you are a gun owner or support gun owners, you might be more interested in the Gun Owners of America – http://gunowners.org/
The most gunophobic countries still generally allow people to own rifles. It’s also a bit more tricky to commit suicide with a rifle unless you have really long arms, so rope control (especially made from hemp) becomes essential to protect society.
