Follow the money to prison

75 year old Patrick Kiley used to host an infomercial investment show. The SEC charged him for his role in promoting unregistered investments in a $175 million Ponzi scheme. He has claimed he didn’t know it was a Ponzi scheme and sued any news outlet who reported the SEC action.

A Federal judge has just sent him to prison for 20 years. He should have realized that only the Federal government is allowed to run Ponzi schemes.

Looking at my database, he had a daily show on KSEV-AM in Texas at one time. One of the decisions I made early on was that I was not going to list financial investing infomercials in the directory. Part of the reason is they constantly come and go and change times, and the shows are hard to confirm – but the main reason is the long history of radio hosts luring in people to “invest” money in products in which the host has a financial interest.

Bob Brinker doesn’t do that – all he is doing is selling people subscriptions to his newsletter. He deflects all attempts to give out actual financial advice, except in the most general terms.

The other show I know without looking is Watchdog on Wall Street with Chris Markowski – mostly for its entertainment value as he flails away at the investment bankers and Wall Street and Congress. It has never been clear to me though how the show makes money.

The SEC is pretty good at scooping up the small fry. Let’s see them go after some Big Game…..now that would be interesting to watch. Of course there would be the inevitable dead bodies to deal with.
