Remembering Lebanon & Ronald Reagan

Despite being a life long Republican (until this year), I refused to vote for Ronald Reagan both times. If I was to try to sum up why in a sentence, please explain to me how – Oliver North was “protecting Democracy” when he arranged military aid to “rebels” in Nicauragua – in direct violation of the law blocking that type of action – a law passed by Congress and signed by the President.

One of the more stupid things Reagan did was ordered several WW II destroyers brought out of mothballs in order to refight the wars of his youth. When Lebanon erupted in Civil War, with Israel backing the Christians and Syria the Muslims, the US intervened as part of a multinational peace keeping force (France being the other nation – France has a long standing relationship with Lebanon).

But the “neutral” United States started firing artillery into the hills aimed at the Druze militia. The USS New Jersey was sent off the coast to intimidate the Lebanese opposed to the Israeli occupation of their country – the result was 241 US “peacekeepers” dead at the Beirut airport in October 23rd, 1983.

Rather than getting sucked deeper into the civil war, Reagan in December had the USS New Jersey randomly lob its 16 inch guns at the “terrorists” without spotters – after killing some civilians and making his “point”, the US withdrew on February 26th, 1984.

That’s what Ronald Reagan “taught” Syria.

During the Reagan years, the terrorism was in Central America. Here is Noam Chomsky interviewed by Amy Goodman:

One small correction that doesn’t really change the story or lessons learned:

Reagan didn’t bring WWII “destroyers” out of mothballs for refit, they were the big fleet battleships, the Missouri class ships. They were retrofitted with modern fire control and cruise missiles while retaining their 16-inch guns. The belief by the Navy was that in many parts of the world the bad guys were terrified of seeing a big battleship appear close off their coast, whereas an aircraft carrier 200 miles away over the horizon was “no big deal” because their citizens were never aware it was there. There’s probably a lot of truth to that.

I think Fawn Hall was way better looking than Jennifer Flowers.

well, with the ‘Obo’ setting up our boys off the coast, I hope they are out of range of the Exocet missile. (Syria may have something better today) ?
Just ask Britain about the Exocet and ships.

I am calling my congressman today and asking him to vote no on Syria intervention with the option for a side of Iran and NK. ( As Lindsey & his friend McClown said yesterday).
I swear they are ‘Dum and Dumber’ riding that scooter out of the whiteHouse.
I guess Obo said the could play with ‘Reggie love’ if they vote yes for intervention.
    geesh

According to the sources I could find, Fawn Hall married some Hollywood guy who introduced her to crack cocaine. After an overdose that almost killed her, she went into rehab. He later died, supposedly from cancer. So she’s now a childless widow with a high school education living in West Hollywood, working in a book store.
