Pacifica Radio on the Ropes

This story has been loitering around for a few years, but seems about to come to a head. Pacifica is as far left as a radio station / network can be in the United States.

Their history goes back to the 1940s founded by activists who opposed U.S. involvement in World War II. It owns two stations in Oakland, California, WBAI in New York City, and stations in Washington DC, Houston TX, and Los Angeles.

Pacifica’s programming is carried by a number of Public Radio stations and college radio stations – the most prominent being Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now!”, a daily hour long screed about how much better the world would be without the United States. The situation started to get attention a few years ago with WBAI was cut off from funding from California and forced to let some of its staff go.

Now the Mother Ship is failing – the organization (like much of Public Radio) has grown top heavy with administrative types giving themselves generous compensation packages while putting little money into programming. People laid off from Pacifica have been mounting a campaign to boycott giving money until they are hired back (“We had to kill Pacifica to save it”). Maybe the White House could lean on Goldman and GE Capital to shovel some free government money in their direction.
