In God We Trust

There are talk show hosts I don’t like but there are a handful I despise.

Since Andrea Tantaros quit at TRN, she has been replaced by Sam Sorbo and frequently her weekend cohost incredibly obnoxiuos Marius Forte.

Both are wanting to relive the McCarthy era where everyone who doesn’t hold their religious beliefs must be a Communist. At the height of the Red Scare, the politicians ordered the Federal Reserve to add “In God We Trust” to the money, as if somehow we wouldn’t believe God exists if not for the government, or conversely that it requires God to fool you into thinking that piece of paper has value.

So today, Mario made the brilliant assertion that if atheists don’t believe in God, they should stop using money. I’m not an atheist, but 99% of the money I spend doesn’t say “In God we trust”, it says “Visa” or “MasterCard” or “online bill payment”.

The more “Conservatives” want to base their principles on religion rather than rational thought and logic, the less I am willing to go along with their vision of the future.

The irony here is that the idea of putting this on money occurred during the “Civil” War, asserting that God must be on the side of the Federal Union, not those Godless Southerners. Hey, God was on the side of George Washington, unlike all those Anglican British “redcoats”.

    • Art Stone says:

As an example, the Battle Hymn of the Republic was specifically invoking “God and Jesus are on our side” as Northerners were preparing to kill their former countrymen.

Only slightly related, I’m listening to Charles Butler who is still filling in for Rusty Humphries talking to a guy warning that the death of Mandela is likely to accelerate the genocide of whites by black Africans. The former WVON host playing the role of black TEA party “supporter” is countering the guest’s facts by talking over him and playing the liberal game of changing the subject.. “well what about ‘x’?” Butler is even teetering on the edge of “blame it on the Jews”. When most of the world was applying sanctions against Apartheid, Israel continued selling weapons to the South African government. If you listen to local “black” radio, it takes little time to pick up on the deep hatred many blacks have for Jewish people – the Nation of Islam is just one of the ways this is expressing itself.

I can think of 19 guys that trusted in God on 9-11. Be careful when someone tells you he is speaking for God.

      • foyle says:

Good point. Add to that all the suckers…. I mean faithful…. who sent $$$ to Jim & Tammy Baker, Jimmy Swaggart, Pat Robertson, etc….

        • Art Stone says:

          Serious digression now 🙂

You may know know that Jim and Tammy Faye and their air conditioned doghouse were in Charlotte. They built their Heritage USA Christian Theme Park just over the South Carolina line, within a short distance of Carowinds Theme Park.

What sunk the Bakkers was they started selling time shares in buildings they were building in the complex – and took money for far more weeks than they had – basic financial fraud 101, and not protected by the 1st amendment.

It turns out the one building they did build was so poorly built it was uninhabitable. It sat empty for maybe 20 years – the building kept leaning over further and further, and there was no way to repair it. The building was eventually demolished and the land sold for some other purpose.

I guess Satan won after all.

Airline 101 – sell more seats on a plane than the plane has. 😉

I personally think that as bad as Jim & Tammy were that Pat Robertson takes the PT Barnum prize for religious hucksters.

Back in the late 60’s or early 70’s Pat had a “vision” and a “prophecy” (directly from God of course) that he was to build a fourth network that would ‘proclaim the gospel’ and turn America ‘back’ to Jesus, thus ushering in the 2nd coming.

Of course, as these ponzi’s go, the visionary isn’t the one who foots the bill, instead he recruits millions of suckers to finance ‘God’s work’.

Where Pat exceeds all others is that he not only brought in the $$ harvest, but he then turned around and sold CBN to one of Satan’s minions (Fox), which in turn sold it to another of the Devil’s workers (ABC/Disney).

Where did the money from the sale of CBN end up? Why, in the pockets of Robertson and his family members of course. If Pat had one iota of veracity about him, he would have returned all the money to the faithful supporters who built his empire (with interest). I might have some level of respect for the bum if he did that AND admitted that he did not hear personally from God and was lying all along.

            //end soapbox//

I feel the same way about Oral Roberts who “owns” Tulsa. At the time I was living in Oklahoma, he pulled the “God has told me he is going to call me home if you don’t send me money” ploy. Now seriously, if you actually are living your life so someday you’ll go to heaven and be with God, there is nothing to be afraid of.

He also raised money to build an incredibly impractical high rise hospital called the City of Faith Medical Center – his concept seemed to be if you died on the 60th floor, you got a head start on your journey to heaven. Hospitals are all only several stories tall for a reason. If you go into cardiac arrest on the 60th floor and need an elevator to travel 50 stories to an operating room, you’ll be dead before you get there – not to mention the logistics of running oxygen lines, etc…

The building was built but they didn’t have the money to actually create fully equipped rooms (who knew medical equipment is really expensive?) – so when it opened, there were only a few floors that had anything on them, and no critical mass to attract doctors.

In 1989, the hospital was closed and converted to office space. In 1991, the large praying hands statue was moved to nearby Oral Roberts University

Oral Roberts went to be with God in 2009. Two of his 4 children are already there. His son Richard (the second generation) is now 65, trying to be his father. Last year, he was arrested for driving his Mercedes 93 mph in Tulsa while over the DUI limit. Richard has 5 daughters from two wives – his only son died shortly after birth. He and his wife are taking about $1 million in year from ORU and their ministry to Serve God. It looks like they are not even going to make it to generation three of the three generation rule.

Agreed. There are certainly some nutty people who come up with nutty ideas. It does say “In God We Trust” on one side and the reverse has all sorts of occult symbolism. So, question is, in which God are they trusting? Some belief systems are dangerous when taken to the extreme. Consider the outbreak of occultism in Germany in the 1920’s – 1930’s, the gods they worshiped, and all the atrocities that it led to. And do not overlook the fact that the occultist were in the minority.

  3. CC1s121LrBGT says:

Did God create the universe, or did the Universe create god?

    • Nidster says:

Who knows, as in provable knowledge? Still, that does not keep people from speculating about how the Universe came about. Dr. Gerald Schroeder is a physicist from MIT who has a modified, ‘day-age’ theory that is interesting if one needs to base it on a literal reading of the Creation account in the Torah. But, as with all other theories it has some ‘holes’ in it. Dr. Joseph P. Ferrel has a theory that all ‘matter’ in the Universe is made up of nothing but spinning vortices of nothing, bound together by an electromagnetic field in a sort of Matrix.

Bottom line, there are bigger questions. Is this all there is or will we live forever, and if so, in what form, and will our ‘life’ be pleasant, or horrifying?

  4. briand75 says:

Curious – the folks who seem to promote God and Religion often seem so very far from the tenets of God and Religion. I may be spinning vortices of nothing, but I believe in God. Religion is a human organizational affectation that some enjoy and some don’t. Communists punished Religion and the religious. No wonder some folks are sensitive. Well – I need to go off an spin some more vortices.

    • CC1s121LrBGT says:

Often religion is used by a tool to use other people – either to take their money, or to get them to do things they would not do otherwise. The 19 young men who sacrificed their lives for their god on 9-11 is an extreme example.

      • Art Stone says:

I worked very briefly for an interesting man doing computer work. He was Christian by religion, Jewish by ethnicity. He deliberately chose to drive a German made BMW car.

He was an orthopedic surgeon, one of the pioneers in arthroscopic surgery. He taught other surgeons how to do it and sold equipment to them.

He was an honorable man doing good work, but the longer I was there in the office, the more I realized he was using religion to control the people working for him so they wouldn’t ask for a raise or question what they were doing.

In 2000, WABC got very interesting because Jews for Jesus (the doctor was a member) wanted to advertise on WABC. There was a lot of heated arguments on air and off. WABC (then owned by Disney) ultimately yanked the ads under the general notion they promoted hate.

  5. Nidster says:

This might be a little off on topic regarding “the politicians ordered the Federal Reserve to add “In God We Trust” to the money.” In 1983 I was in a prayerful mode and kept asking for an answer to this question: “How will evil finally overtake and destroy America?” This basic request was made many times over the course of the Spring and Summer.

Finally an answer came, “Income Re-Distribution”.

    • Art Stone says:

Jesus spoke to a large crowd and the greedy rich people present said they only had 2 fish and 5 loaves. Jesus redistributed their wealth and fed 5000 people and wound up with 12 baskets left over. Jesus was a Keynesian.

      • Nidster says:

I hear you. I also read where they begged to be fed again the following day.

Oh, I forgot to mention that no one spoke the words “Income Re-Distribution” to me. I figured out the answer by observing the actions and methods of those who were already in power and were already wealthy. They pass laws that affect us, but don’t apply to them. Just like ObamaCare and thousands of other laws. Plus, they can legally trade the markets on “inside’ information.

Who doesn’t want to be a respected Congressman, or the Commander?

        • CC1s121LrBGT says:

“Who doesn’t want to be a respected Congressman, or the Commander?”

It takes a youthful population just finished with the spoonfeeding in the government schools… augmented by poor imigrants that barely speak English —-> together that gives a society with “respected Congressman”.
