The Spanish language web site for Obamacare is reportedly functioning much better than the English language web site.
Wow!!! That’s an interesting line-up of programs, from an anthropological view. The majority of the station’s programming appears to cater to differing religious factions (if one considers that sports fans follow their teams religiously), and in 2 different languages. Throw in a little bit of talk show format, mix in some good ole down home bartering then stir it all up with a bit of elevator music, and it’s little wonder AM radio is dying to stop clogging up the airwaves and go silent.

Another little detail – one of the stations playing nostalgia music ran a PSA about the city’s leaf and yard waste program. It cautioned people that there would be no collection the week of Thanksgiving.
Another thing that might not jump out right away – the demographics of Charlotte is the city is roughly 1/3 black and 13% so-called Hispanic. Not one of those AM stations has programming targeted at blacks. North Carolina has always gone out of the way to not be a welfare handout state – the state doesn’t have the resources and the culture doesn’t tolerate it. Most of the black people have jobs and incomes to spend – Charlotte is not South Chicago, although the news suggests we do have drug gangs shooting at each other.
The population of the city itself is roughly the same size as the city of Detroit. Charlotte is 297 Square miles in size, compared to Detroit’s 138 square miles. A lot of that is land around the airport that is undeveloped and bought back in the 1970s anticipating future growth – Detroit’s main airport is not in the city, there are also lots of parks and golf courses.
Detroit was slapped together as a factory town and grew fast after world war one (the war to end all wars). Lot sizes are very small on those $1000 houses. Until the freeways started being built, living close to the factory was important – hence the higher population density.
When satellite radio starts to sound like a viable option, there is a problem.
Sad. Are they still putting AM radio in new cars ? I saw on ‘Amazon river’ website the other day they had a Sony am/fm portable /table radio. Just a simple one with on/off, volume & tuning. Not digital. Like $17. probably from china. I have a Zenith AM radio here somewhere that is just AM. Transistor, still works great. made in USA.
No reason to turn it on anymore though.
