WWRL-AM in New York saying “Adios”

Tom Taylor’s newsletter confirms yesterday’s rumor that the one time New York affiliate of the so-called Progressive Air America talk network is getting ready to go to Spanish Talk. Prior to selling its soul to the Democratic Party, it programmed gospel and Caribbean music and sold brokered time. Starting in 2004, Steve Malzberg was cohosting the morning show with a black woman pretending to be a Republican – as much as Mayor Bloomberg was a Republican. A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

This aligns with Clear Channel dumping the progressive format from two huge California stations. Clear Channel had previously torn down the towers of its progressive talk station in Detroit, and handed the license over to the MMTC.

The Bill Press / Stephanie Miller / Ed Schultz / Thom Hartmann / Norm Goldman lineup appears to be on its last legs with the Cumulus purchase of their syndicator Dial Global (formerly Jones Radio Network).

There was this little news item recently about the amount of money that labor unions have given Ed Schultz. If they were playing music, it would be called Payola.

I miss the Caribbean music they used to play in the evenings. They did not stream back in the early 2000’s (and there was the whole convoluted deal with their purchase of WOWO that even after the purchase, I could still never hear them OTA in Detroit), but when I was visiting family in NY over Christmas, I would love listening to the often very humorous and biting songs that were just released for the Carnival competition in Trinidad. When they added the left-wing talk, they took of the music, but I think they brought some back in the off hours when there were financial problems with the network paying them.

LOL – Who? Never heard of Ed Schultz. I did hear of Schultz and Dooley though. Any upstate New Yorkers might catch that reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqXLFWIuLNE

Eddy is the right wing gun loving guy from North Dakota who realized there was a lot of money to be made from labor unions too stupid to realize he is just playing a role to a nonexistent audience.

Was Shultz just preaching to the choir?

About to the same degree as Michael Savage.

With Savage moving to 3 PM on major market stations, the media is going to really start looking more closely at his background and his personal life. The pinnacle of his career has a good chance of being a flameout.

One thing that will be curious to watch is if any Hannity affiliates that aren’t Clear Channel owned will jump ship to Savage on Cumulus. The focus in Cumulus seems more on getting their shows onto their stations rather than aggressively marketing them in syndication competing directly with Premiere.

I just read that Salem is picking up Hannity in Washington DC on WWRC. No official word if Savage will be carried live on WMAL. Having the government workers exposed to Savage on their drive home on the beltway could be interesting, but the ratings are very clear – WAMU owns DC and most government workers listen to NPR on their commute.

          • Nidster says:

Well, if most government workers listen to NPR on their commute they will get better news than they would get from some news services. The problem is still based on perception, and the social engineering that goes on. I believe if any of us listen only to Rush, Hannity, Levin, Shultz, Maddow (you get the idea), which are semi-entertainers, then we only get the news ‘they’ want us to hear.

Social engineering, Perception Management, Propaganda…..look into it!

          • According to Tom Taylor today, Savage will be live on WMAL from 3-5 followed by a news-heavy hour hosted by Larry O’Connor.

We need an over / under pool on how long he lasts.

At TRN, his contract was only for 2 live hours a day, and he frequently just decided not to work. He seems more disciplined at Cumulus so far – but he is going to have a hundred spotlights shining on him. For the most part, he’s stopped the random name calling of other hosts. I still expect Levin to follow Hannity to Premiere when his contract permits. Try to picture Savage saying “and be sure to stay tuned to my friend Mark Levin on many of these stations”

            I’ll go with 5 weeks

If WWRC is picking up Hannity, That leaves Michael Medved out in the cold.
Is Hannity really an upgrade? At least Medved has conspiracy day on days with Full moons. That station looks like a Salem hybrid lineup. Didn’t they have Beck at one time?
They might as well run Dave Ramsey re-runs. (Beans & rice) 3-6.
I notice they (wwrc) boosted their power to 35K watts. Back last summer you couldn’t hear it in Herndon or Leesburg VA. They needed to do something. I bet no one could hear the show in a office. Maybe its better now.
They Need to put Mark Walters with his Armed American radio show on 3-6 weekdays. That would scare the cheit out of Goverment workers. “Oh no uncle Joe, we can’t go outside the beltway.” LOL

It would be interesting if Joe Biden would go on that show and offer self defense advice.

John Derbyshire did a piece about the homicide rate in the post Apartheid South Africa, then compared it to the cities in the United States with high homicide rates. The pattern was pretty hard to ignore.

The book the Bell Curve points out that the crime rate of people of European ancestry in the United States is comparable to the countries of Europe. Facts are stubborn things.
