Smithfield isn’t your dad’s ham company

In my pursuit of Southern Food Porn, I noticed Gwaltney hot dogs on sale for $.99 for 12 ozs – who could pass up that deal?

What I didn’t know is that old timey Gwaltney brand is actually owned by Smithfield. For a long time, it has been Smithfield isn’t the company I knew 30 years ago. They also own Armour, Eckrich, Morrell Curly’s and a few others.

However, Smithfield has been sold to a Chinese Company

What, me worry?

  1. Well, they are hot DOGS, after all. Enjoy.

They tasted more like ground up wallboard. They actually were mechanically separated chicken (that would make a lovely youtube video) with a little pork and touch of beef thrown in.

  2. Seeing Armour listed there reminded me of the old Dial Armour company, based in Arizona if I’m not mistaken — deodorant and meat, what a combination!

Yeah they also own Valleydale, makers of the original ‘Honee-weenee’ . They were headquartered in Salem Virginia.

If you notice, in the history, the old man died in 1988 and family sold the company in 1992 to Smithfield. Hmmmmmm
Well you can’t blame the Chinese. They have a boatload of FRN’s and have to buy something tangible with them. Hell I would to. Thanks to the ‘progressives’, they sold our country out from under us. It don’t look good for us much anymore.
    Hate that for the young’uns.
