Much of anything, but help if you know anything.

An 82 year old woman was found “killed” (about the only substantive hint) in her town home about half a mile from where I live. She lived right across the street from the Carmel Country Club. As the story indicates, this type of thing just doesn’t happen in this part of Charlotte.
In my random encounters with people here, very few have roots here, and many are very recent arrivals. I haven’t yet concluded whether this is people fleeing the North for a better life or a coordinated effort to convert Charlotte into the next Detroit. Senseless killings of old defenseless white people is where it starts. Then the exodus.
Pat McCrory (now Governor) was the mayor from 1995 until 2009, when he resigned to run for governor and failed (in 2009)
Anthony Foxx was his replacement – he left to be Secretary of Transportation in the Obama administration. The current mayor who has been there for two months is another black male Democrat. Patrick Cannon had been on the City Council. He is a graduate of NC A&T, a racially segregated university in Greensboro – students from there are remembered for staging the sitin at the lunch counter at Woolworth’s in Greensboro.
Rodney Monroe was named Chief of Police in 2008. He has a BA degree in police science from the University of Phoenix, which isn’t in Arizona. His “real” degree in “interdisciplinary studies” from Virginia Comminwealth University. In 2008, VCU realized they had given him the degree in error, but decided not to expose the university to more scrutiny. He only had 6 credit hours of work at VCU. My nephew from Seattle has assuaged his racial guilt by getting Mayor Cannon elected because of the color of his skin. Everything is under control.
What, me worry?
At one time, University of Phoenix was a reasonable alternative… not unlike DeVry. Univ of Phx for Business Admin/MBA candidates, DeVry for programming, IT, etc.
But that was 20 years ago. There’s a lot more competition nowadays (e.g. online).
Both ‘universities’ devolved into costly, high profit, low QA buy a degree operations.
Driving around Phoenix on the loop freeways, you can’t help but notice a plethora of large shiny office buildings plastered with the Univ of Phoenix logo, including the NFL stadium. It’s clear where students’ tuition and fees have been invested: Real Estate.
‘Nationalization’ of UofP destroyed any credibility. The Chief’s credentials are ‘virtual’.
From what I’ve been able to figure out, he had been the police chief in Richmond, Virginia. The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department required that candidates for the job of police chief have at least a 4 year degree. At the time he applied he was the police chief of Richmond, which is where Virginia Commonwealth University is located.
Someone at VCU apparently wanted to facilitate getting him out of Richmond and onto his new job in Charlotte. They gave him a “degree” in “interdisciplinary studies” with only 6 credit hours that were supposedly done at VCU. The rest were credits for classes he took at the FBI academy. Even the most generous “transferred in” or “life experience” college course programs require at least 30 credit hours of actual study at a university to get a degree.
The Charlotte police union figured this out – they have things called “investigators” who then challenged his credentials.

The result was 4 senior people at VCU leaving under a cloud of suspicion. The main action VCU took in response was they launched an investigation to try to identify the whistle blower who exposed the bogus degree.
He has since gotten the degree from UoP and the issue apparently has faded

Wow! I’m in disbelief after reading the first paragraph in link #1 (vcu).
That’s like saying: “Our computer staff made some errors and awarded degrees to all entering freshman… the degrees stand.”
Yeah, Governor Terry McAuliff of Virginia is virtual too. Bill Clinton has been seen in Richmond a lot here lately. Probably interviewing interns. Waste.

Detroit clones are being created in many parts of the country. I have not doubt that Greensboro, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Columbia, and Atlanta will all get to that stage eventually.
Speaking of cities that are ‘Detroit-like’, am I the only one that has noticed that this story gets ZERO national or international coverage?

I’m sure that Nagin’s ethnic and political ties have nothing to do with the major media ignoring this story right? If he was a buddy of George W. Bush or Chris Christie, they would not give any attention either, right?
Whatever happened to Charlie Rangel’s investiation of himself on tax evasion charges? How many people know that the Police Chief in Detroit (Hart) went to jail for looting the fund of confiscated drug money and splitting it with Coleman Young who was never indicted and died a hero of the Democratic Party? The most outrageous detail was this was right when Nelson Mandela was coming to Detroit to spread the message about South Africa, and Hart & Coleman used the money to buy Krugerrands, the gold coins from South Africa.
I used to love watching all the investigations of Charlie’s Rangels. My favorite was Farrah Fawcett Majors.
She’s dead.

You need to worry- there’s a lot of unreported crime down here (in Charlotte) or so I have heard from many people. I know someone who had their house shot at. The cops came, she showed the bullet hole and the bullet to the cops, they left and didn’t file a report! She now lives in Vegas…
So only a few new details. Death was due to blunt force trauma. Her son lives two doors away and found her body. It appeared to him that she just fell and hit her head. He was surprised when the police decided she had been killed. No statement as to whether there was any sign of forced entry or missing property. She was not sexually assaulted. Her house is literally right across the street from the Carmel Country Club.
My instincts are it either just was an accidental death (or head trauma from a sudden loss of consciouness) or it was someone who knows her and an argument got out of hand. I really doubt it was random crime. Carmel road is a very busy street. A heroin junkie would be spotted in seconds. People here look out for each other.
Well, since this is the greater Charlotte/Mecklinburg county crime thread, Art do go playing in Mallard Creek today. Chopper 9 on site.

“CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The city of Charlotte is asking for the public’s help to try and find the person who illegally dumped chemicals into Mallard Creek.
Officials held a media briefing Friday morning to share details on the investigation into the illegal dumping. City Manager Ron Carlee, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Director Barry Gullet, CFD Hazmat Deputy Jeff Dulin and CMPD Detective Rob Klass were in attendance.
Officials said that on Thursday, CFD hazmat crews responded to reports of an unusual substance flowing into the Mallard Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant on U.S. 29 North. An oily sheen could be seen on the surface of the water. The flow was contained in a holding tank until it was determined that it was safe to return the plant for service. The plant was back online Friday morning.
Chopper 9 flew over the Mallard Creek Wastewater Plant Thursday while hazmat crews were investigating.
The chemical has been identified as polychlorinated biphenyls — or PCBs — and other organic chemicals. Officials said the city’s water supply has not been affected by the illegal dumping and that this was an isolated incident in Mallard Creek.
Police think this is a case of illegal and deliberate dumping. They are asking anyone who may have seen anything suspicious late Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning along Sugar Creek Road and W.T. Harris Boulevard to call police.
Officials want people living along Mallard Creek south of the plant to be careful and avoid animal and human contact with the water until more tests can be done.
Carlee said officials couldn’t assure that no damage had been done to the creek water until those tests come back. Investigators think the chemical was probably dumped by a septic pump truck.
Carlee said that they did not know exactly how much of the chemical was dumped but that septic trucks the size that was likely hauling it can hold up to 5,000 gallons.
Police officials said they were looking to get federal assistance with the investigation. ”
That’s some Crap ! If there was some way I could pin it on my boss, I sure would.

Did she own a nail gun?

The only news is that there is no news. The son is not talking to the press and neither are the police. I think it is the lack of information that is making the elderly neighbors nervous. A woman dying from hitting her head looks a lot different than a stranger breaking in and murdering an old woman. A few details like whether her property was taken, where her body was found, if there was an obvious weapon involved would at least give people some idea what to look out for.
I noted that the police launched an extensive “public education” campaign on how to keep safe. That “education” did not include information on how to acquire a handgun and prepare to use it if necessary. They mainly advised that people add a second deadbolt on their door. Door locks keep out honest people. The only value they provide is provide evidence that a person forced their way into a house after the fact.
On Thursday morning, police said it was “blunt force trauma” that claimed Ina Feldman’s life, and that there were no signs of sexual assault.

Looking at the map attached to the original report, there’s little chance that someone is going to wander into this area while looking for a break-in. My guess it is someone who she knew, or perhaps someone (like a landscaper perhaps) that was familiar with the area. There’s too many people living close by, someone would have noticed someone unusual around. Why would someone drive to this cul-de-sac, and target that house at random?
