Government Employees and you

Part of my unhappiness at the moment is that I’m living in what turns out to be a cesspool of local corruption.

New Haven Independent Story

Just one of the local stories in the area.

Over in Shelton, just to the south (one time home of the guy who tried to blow up Times Square), the mayor and the building inspector let it be made clear that if you wanted to build something in town, developers need to make special arrangements involving gratuities off the books.    The developer didn’t give anything to them, but did give them enough of a suggestion that he might be willing to pay – at least according to the politicians when the Feds told them they were the target of an investigation.   There was no actual proof (recordings, wiretaps, etc..) of the developer offering anything – but the local people are so anti-developer that they convicted him with no hard evidence.

A member of the tax board in Derby has been charged with embezzling money from his employer.   And don’t get me started about the mayor of Derby and the Parking Authority…. of the mayor of Waterbuy who demanded sex with the young daugther of a prostitute or the former mayor of New Haven… or the former Republican Governor…

Opt-in Tracking

The notion that people should be able to not be tracked while using the Web is gaining momentum in Congress and the browser community.

This morning’s project is to change this web site to show what a world without tracking is like.   Once I put the changes in place, the web site will only track what stations and shows you listen to IF you explicitly go to the Preferences and turn “Allow Tracking” on.   By default, the site will not track you.

What this means is the things you do will have no effect on the statistics or popularity of the stations or shows.   Being the passive aggressive person I am, if you choose to not allow tracking, you will not receive the benefits either.   You won’t be able to sort by popularity, you won’t be able to look at trend graphs or listening statistics – shows will appear in alphabetical order.   In short, about 90% of the value of the web site will go away – unless you allow your activities to be tracked.

Tracking is tied to your Cookie in the browser, not your “Account”.   If you delete cookies, you will have to go back and “Opt in” again.    With tracking turned off, you will not be able to test streams, report broken streams or anything that relies on a test to see if you actually clicked on the Listen button first.

Everything of value has a price, even if you don’t see it.

Why do you need the 4th Amendment if you have nothing to hide?

“Sir, your car was weaving”

Thank you officer.

“I see you have a cell phone.   Would you mind if I have a look at your call history?”

I do not consent to a search.

“Very well.   You know I could call the canine unit and have them tear apart your car, don’t you?   You wouldn’t want that to happen if you have nothing to hide.  You aren’t carrying drugs are you?”

I do not consent to a search.

“Oh, so you’re going to be a tough guy.    Let’s see what’s in your cell phone”.

I do not consent to a search and I won’t give you my cell phone.

“No problem, my CelleBrite UFED will give me your list of phone numbers, your call log, the list of web sites you have visited, all your emails, and all those porno videos on it”.

I am not consenting to a search.  You have no warrant and you haven’t stated a reason why you believe I have committed a crime.

“Your car was weaving”.

I do not consent to a search.   I’ve “wiped” my cell phone and unless you have a reason to detain me, I will be leaving now.

“Son, you’re under arrest for interfering with a criminal investigation by destroying evidence in some crime you probably committed, but I don’t know what it is yet”.

Welcome to your Free America.

Belarus – the next Libya

http://blogs.voanews.com/russia-watch/2011/04/18/belarus-bombing-in-the-police-state/

Belarus is out of money. As it devalues its money, it has to increase the amount paid to government employees and pensioners, creating a larger deficit and feeding the death spiral. The country is ruled by a brutal dictator whose government is banned from travel.

You may remember a subway bombing about a week ago in Minsk. They caught the guy who planted the bomb, but have been unable to figure out a motive. [uh-huh]

U.S. Pledges $123 million for Chernobyl cleanup

Jimmy Carter’s National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brezezinski (his daughter works with Joe Scarborough) has offered up $123 million to help pay for a $1 billion dome containing the worst of the mess at Chernobyl for the next 100 years. (only 54 million years left!)

Russia is flush with oil money, and this was a Soviet operation (not inside Russia). This is pretty outrageous that US taxpayers are being asked to pay for this.

Getting “Clear”

No, this isn’t about Scientology.

For about 3 years, I’ve been writing about the 4G WiMax system that is going to change your world, bringing high speed broadband Internet access to your car, and all that means. Remember that I used to run FindAnISP.com, that was used by several million people to choose dialup devices about 10 years ago… I know a bit about the subject…

Sprint hopped early on the WiMax bandwagon (trying to beat AT&T’s LTE 4G service to market) – WiMax is true 4G wireless services with speeds comparable to fast DSL or Cable Internet. They turned it into a joint venture under the name Clear. Clear has arrived in my area, according to mailers I started receiving. Poor Internet access is part of the reason maintaining this streaming radio database got out of hand (with all the streaming video ads).

So I called Clear today. I live in a low area and so I’m concerned that it might not work or only give me 3G or 2G speeds. So I called to get information – this is approximate.

“Hello, what service can I activate for you?”

You may not activate any service. I called because I have some questions about the Clear service.

“What’s your address?”

123 main street

“Yes, the computer says the service is available in your area”

That’s good – but I live in a low area – I’m concerned that it might not work where I need it

“Well, the computer says the service is available in your area.”

I understand that – if I go forward and order the service and it doesn’t work, what happens?

“I can’t answer your question – all I can say is the computer…”

That’s not answering my que…

“Don’t interrupt me. The computer says that…”

I don’t think you understand I’m the customer (maybe). I need to know what happens if I sign up and the service won’t work.

“Well, you’ll get transferred to tech support and they’ll work with you”

Okay – if they can’t make the service work here, what happens?

“Well, my computer says the service is available in your area. – beyond that, I can’t answer your question”

Can you transfer me to someone who can answer my question?

“I’ve told you that the computer says…”

Thank you for wasting my time. [Click]

Keep in mind this is the “customer service” I’m getting before I’m locking myself into a 12 month contract…

So I won’t be getting Clear.

The Next Government power grab

Prescription drug registry arrives in MT

I just heard on the hourly news this is now being pushed from Washington DC.

Because we need to protect people [the children?] from drug overdoses, each state is going urged to create a mandatory prescription drug registry, so that the states (and presumably shared with the Feds) will have a database of every prescription medication. This is really just a head start on Obamacare – once the government is buying your drugs, you can’t exactly claim that you have a right to privacy (unless it is a prescription for birth control or abortion pills or HIV drugs, of course)

So the next logical step is to require drug makers to stamp a unique serial number on every pill that can be tracked back to your prescription – so when that Oxycontin pill shows up on the street, the police can knock on your door and accuse you of selling prescription drugs to drug addicts.

Who could argue with that?

The Breitbart / Glenn Beck rift

Daily Beast Interview

If you listened to Beck yesterday, he droned on and on about the phrase “The Truth has no agenda”, and how he was accused of stealing it (and other stuff) from bloggers.

Glenn introduced the audience to his friend Mike Opelka. Glenn was the best man at Mike’s wedding. Pat has known him since 1990. Mike came up with the name “The Truth has no Agenda” in 2009, and works for Glenn on the Blaze.

So it’s Andrew Breitbart that is rattling he the chains of “he steals people’s stuff”….

Some things you need to think about:
– Breitbart is close to Michael Savage, who thinks everyone in the world always is stealing his stuff
– Brietbart helped create the Huffington Post
– Glenn Beck hired away one of Breitbart’s senior people to start The Blaze
– Glenn has said loudly a number of times tha this #1 directive to his staff is they are to do their own research and not just republish other people’s work

Much of the tension between the two involves the Sherrod video. When it surfaced, Beck refused to play the video, labelled it as suspect and demanded to see the entire video unedited. Once that was out, Glenn was furious the way O’Keefe and Breitbart had edited the video – cutting out the context. After the full video was out, the bulk of Glenn’s anger was directed at the President however, for allowing Breitbart’s video to stampede the President into firing her. That entire issue is currently in the courts.

Monitor Group and “dirty hands”

Harvard and Libya

The Monitor group is affiliated with Harvard University and for the past few years was advising Libya how to improve Libya’s economy – and now embarrassed that they took money to assist the Libyan “regime”.

You know… The same people who seem eager to want to restore the “prince” of Benghazi have been silent about the brutal dictatorship in Cuba that is going on 50 years and has the same general origin.

France says “no” to documented migrants

BBC story

One of the principles of the EU is that if a person has the right to live in one EU country, they can travel in any EU country without a visa or special permission. Countries still have some rights to limit people from other countries becoming permanent residents, but getting past the border is 90% of becoming an effective resident.

So Italy is just a few miles from Tunisia. Italy is being flooded by refugees from “free” Tunisia. Tunisia is a former French colony (from 1881 to the 1950s) so while Tunisians are 98% Arabic speaking Muslims, most also speak French.

So Italy has been organizing special trains for Tunisians wanting to go to France. France doesn’t want them in their country, but once Italy has accepted them as refugees, France has no choice in the matter.

You may remember it was France that rejected the EU Constitution – leaving the EU with a common currency and economic destiny, but with countries still having separate national identities.

Mr Phelps, if you accept this mission, this tape will self destruct in 10 seconds.

“C” is for China

About a week ago, I wrote that WAGE-AM in the Washington DC market was about to return to the air as WCRW-AM. I was hoping that stood for Conservative Radio Washington.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. WCRW will be the Beltway outlet for China Radio International, the official propaganda radio service of the government of Communist China.

Welcome your new global overlords.
