Because of the printer paper jam that lasted 4 hours, the RNC Rules committee members are going to miss the gala dinner tonight and have to eat sandwiches in the meeting room. Oh, the inhumanity of it all

Great – a roll call vote on whether to close the primaries, despite it being obvious the amendment failed by a large margin! I love parliamentary procedures!

  3. Fred Stiening says:

Rule 37.1 that “bound means bound” just passed

  4. Fred Stiening says:

Amendment 38.1 to allow a right to vote their conscience is being discussed – the advocate is from Colorado who is a former Democrat

  5. Fred Stiening says:

The Romney Rule 40(b) was repealed unanimously, starting in 2020, being nominated will require only a plurality of 5 states, and votes for candidates not nominated still count

    #nevertrump is dead

Procedurally, once the convention convenes at 2 PM on Monday, this same committee will be empowered to submit the final package of rules it just passed tonight, which will happen, so the rules are set. Bound is Bound and only Trump and Cruz will get TV time. Expect the first ballot to be a voice vote – without adequate support to demand a roll call vote – so Trump will be the nominee without the delegates actually voting for him on the record.

It’s pretty clear from the demeanor of the rules committee that Priebus has laid down the law and there will be unity. The people wanting to be unbound were all from liberal states that won’t vote for Trump anyhow.

All in all, I enjoyed watching the whole thing, but I stipulate I’m weird. Chairing the Committee is a really hard job, and she must wear Depends. Even with my limited knowledge, it is very hard to keep from making mistakes. She did a good job of keeping people aware of what they were voting on. Because the room is full of people who live and breathe rules, they generally caught her errors. There were a handful who were clearly pretty clueless.

By steamrolling the process by forcing it into a single day, they wiped out people’s willingness to keep fighting. That was one of her procedural “errors”. The sheriff from Nevads made a motion to continue tonight until all amendments were processed. In response, a member made a motion to recess and resume at 8 am on Friday. The priveleged motion to recess failed, but she failed to go back to the original motion to keep going all evening.

About 9 PM the group voted to suspend the rules and require that any amendments be submitted by 9:30 PM. Close to 30 were – they were all shot down and eventually withdrawn.

    Mmmmm sausage McElection!
