I doubt they are bluffing, not the nation of Sun Tsu, but they are only doing what we should be doing. One prepares for the worst scenario in hope of avoiding it, not to elicit it. Unless, of course, one is preparing to have supper with the Twelfth Imam. In which case all bets are off. More wars begin because of weakness, or its perception, than because of strength.

The message I’ve heard pretty consistently on John Batchelor is China’s focus is on the South China Sea and asserting that it belongs to China, not the countries that surround it or that it is international waters. Projecting power wider than that is a longer term ambition. The aircraft carrier that they have been working on was started by Soviet Union and was sitting in a shipyard for 20 years.

It’s not enough to have an aircraft carrier – you need planes designed to take off and land from them, pilots trained in how to do it, and infrastructure to protect and resupply the ship while it is deployed.

Hey … here is a little tidbit to gnaw on: Okinawa and the Ryukyu archipelago once upon a time were tributes to China. In fact the island chain’s name, Ryukyu, is simply a Japanified pronunciation of the Chinese name for them — Loo Chu. The Japanese didn’t ask for the Ryukyus and Okinawa. They took them under the Satsuma Daiymo and have held them ever since, with the exception of the US occupation after WW-II. So, technically, Okinawa, Amami Oshima and the other Ryukuan isles which abut the East China Sea, could eventually become places of interest for our our ChiCom friends. This is fun, innit?
