Well, I voted today. Maybe.
Per the Secretary of State instructions from Springfield, I went to the precinct (in the building). There was one touchscreen and about 20 booths for marking ballots for the scanner version.
After one attempt to brush me off, I got my ballot. The judge spotted me (she wasn’t wearing purple but otherwise was the stereotypical SEIU worker). She didn’t seem all that interested in seeing my driver’s ID and signed off in my ballot.
With that in hand, I marked the optically marked ballot, and then put the ballot inside the envelope and sealed it. The theory here is the board of elections will verify my eligibility (again) and then pull out the ballot and run it through the machine, so how the ballot is marked won’t influence whether it is thrown out.
My guess is this building is probably 20% black people, and there were none voting today for whatever that is worth.
As I was leaving, a woman in line said in a loud voice – “I have a question! Why are these posters explaining about presenting an ID written in foreign languages?!”. As I walked by her I said “No se” 😉 [I don’t know]
If there is a Republican area of Chicago, this is probably it.
