Another stalwart news/talk station switches to 24 hour sports talk with no local programming.
Fire the program director, the production staff and hosts. No advertiser boycotts, no Obama taxes, no EEOC reports. Just point the dish at the satellite and put the station on autopilot.
One marker for looking at the future is whether other stations in a market will pick up talk shows following a format change or if everyone is just waiting to bail when their syndicated talk contracts run out.
Seems to be a trend. KBZZ Reno turned into a CBS Sports affiliate today and KTLK Los Angeles is at this very moment broadcasting an NBC Sports show instead of Phil Hendrie.
Both Cox and CBS are looking to sell off their smaller market stations. Making money in a town of 20,000 requires things like personal contact and proving you can cause a crowd to show up at a store. You can’t do that from 1000 miles away over Skype.
KHRO-AM “Radio Free El Paso” is now playing oldies – my head is so dizzy, my head is spinning
It is interesting. Indie 103.1 in Santa Monica sold its transmitter and license a few years ago to cut expenses and go internet only and it was in a very large market, but with a niche format.
WPHT 1210 Philadelphia has ditched Rush and Sean in the afternoon and goes with an local lineup of talkers.
I can enjoy listening to Rush from time to time but could never stand listening to Sean. Either way, it was always annoying to find them both on 4 or 5 stations on my car radio and have no options for anything else.
KREL-AM in Colorado dropped news/talk to change to ESPN
WEUS-AM in Orlando FL is now CBS Sports Radio – goodbye Alex Jones and Mancow.
It’s change to WRSO-AM
