So how’s that for shaking things up?

Combine that with the FCC trying to free up 200 MHz of spectrum for WIFi and the world is about to change again

I point that out to SiriusXM every time it is time for my renewal fee. 🙂

I say turn off all the HDTV broadcasters except two per city and use the bandwidth for WIFI. Of course, someone would have to convince your ex-Senator, Chris Dodd, that that was a good idea. 🙂

I see Sirius as just an interim solution – their basic idea of multiplexing many digital signals in one “pipe” still seems like the right answer. 3G/4G is great, but long term doesn’t work for “radio”, as it is spectrum inefficient unless we build towers every few blocks.

Europe has been trying to move toward DAB – the kind of arrangement you would expect from countries with a socialist instinct – it’s digital multiplexing with share transmission facilities.

For folks like the NAB, there is no upside to more stations fragmenting their audience – hence the death of the expansion of the AM band, and the dismal failure of HD radio, and the battle to keep LPFM off the air that has dragged on for 10 years.
