Behold the iRadio

The owner of Emmis Radio has long asserted that most portable devices have always had the ability to receive FM radio broadcasts and the people selling them deliberately chose to not use the capability.

In the case of Apple, the motive is clear. Apple makes a ton of money from selling iTunes music. Steve Jobs had the clout to turn the entire music business on its head – breaking apart the traditional model that people heard music on the radio, then went to the mall and bought the album. Now people hear music on Pandora, Last.fm, slacker, Spotify, YouTube…

Yesterday, so-called hackers finally were able to “jailbreak” iOS 6.1 and the iPhone 5 – and what did they find? Icons and other evidence that iOS 6.1 added operating system support for “radio” – is that streaming radio or FM? We’ll probably know soon.

Emmis just cut a deal with Sprint to do an advertising revenue share with Sprint to load the Emmis radio app on their cell phones. IHeartRadio has a similar deal with Ford. Get out the checkbook and people start to listen.

Sickening. Just sickening that Capitalism is still running amuck in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Where’s POTUS at these days to stomp this down into the ground?

It was way less technologically advanced than a smartphone I had a Microsoft Zune mp3 player I picked it for the fm radio capabilities.

I’ve got an amazing device that fits in my pocket and can receive both AM and FM broadcasts. It’s a transistor radio. It’s quite technologically advanced…for 1964.

When will these fools stop trying to reinvent the wheel? That HD radio thing went well, didn’t it?

Maybe one of the two Al’s can pony up: Al Jazeera or Al “Ja” Gore.
