This could really catch on if you leave aside the religion and morality

I’d rather see tax money spent to protect people than to protect property of politically connected property owners. We spend more tax money than that protecting the property of the movie studies (cable tv networks)…. but the small real estate owner is subject to all kinds of restrictions, including no being allowed to charge market rates for rent in some major cities. (Wonder what Detroit says about that? 😉 )

Well, let me share a radio story.

Caller calls into Mark Scott (RIP) and tells his experience of being a landlord in Detroit. The issue there is that if you need help evicting a tenant, you’re on your own. Figure you’ll have to pay your tenant to vacate, even though they’re six months behind on their rent. Caller tried to actually go through the process (good luck if your skin isn’t black) and while at the courthouse waiting his turn, his pager went off telling him his building had been set on fire.

The basic idea was (in the 1980s) – you can take a gamble – buy a house for $5k, rent it to a section 8 family for maybe $800 a month. If they last 6 months, you have your money back. Then strip out the copper, the bricks, burn the house down and walk away and stop paying taxes. Repeat 100,000 times
