In case you’ve been distracted by Obamacare, Fred Upton’s (R-MI) ban on tungsten incandescent light bulbs closes the next to last “loophole” and you won’t be able to buy 40 or 60 watt regular light bulbs in three weeks (unless you have Mexican smuggling friends)
Being a good patriotic American, I decided to buy an 11 watt LED light bulb that will last 13.6 years *. It is supposed to be roughly the light of a 60 watt bulb.
After I almost burned my hands removing the “cool” CFL bulb, the LED replacement came to life. It had a very obvious 60 hz flicker when it first came on (it probably uses a rectifying diode). After it warmed up, that went away or I go used to it. I believe it may have been $10.

I thought that Upton had “seen the light” and backed off of that mandate. Of course he is a politician so all pronouncements are only good until the camera’s turn off.
The original 100 watt deadline was pushed back a few months.

For the last 20 years online, people in Canada generally bring up health care within 5 minutes of finding out you’re from the United States. By the time all of the unintended consequences of Obmacare ripple through, the old “be careful what you ask for” may apply.
With everyone having the option of buying a guaranteed issue policy or getting Medicaid – and millions of people being added to Medicaid, I expect even more cost shifting on the uninsured who have assets and less willingness to cut big discounts for paying cash. Time will tell.
On the other hand, Canadian trained doctors working in the US might return home in droves – probably to be replaced by new imports from India.
