Someone had recently mentioned these, so when I spotted them in Walmart (after finishing my Chick Fil A Lunch), you know I had to try them.
The box indicates that these may actually be from Philadelphia and not “Southern”. Ingredients are sugar (although there is a little HFCS) and lots of partially hydrogenated oils. I’m going to enjoy freedom while I can.
A Philly staple. The proper thing to eat after a cheesesteak.
I posted about it here 6 months ago, but you’d have to use your own web crawler to find it. 😉
The end of the box was misfolded which didn’t inspire confidence. So far nothing to get excited about.
I just tried the Koffee Kake cupcakes (or is it Coffee Cake KupKakes?). Both types have a bitterness that is a bit odd. It might be baking soda, but with the long list of chemicals, it’s hard to know. People tend to like what they grew up with and if you experience it later in life, it just doesn’t have the same magic. Two examples that come to mind are Vernor’s Ginger Ale in Detroit and White Castle.
Vernor’s is a taste I never could acquire during my Michigan days (I didn’t grow up on the stuff). It always tasted odd to me, very different from Schweppes or Canada Dry. I don’t know why Vernor’s tastes so different from those two.
I’ve had Vernor’s and not really cared for it. I grew up on Canada Dry. But in adult life, I found a new favorite – Ginger Beer of any brand – sure beats Canada Dry.
In adult life my favorite is beer (forget the ginger). Anything that is not “light” beer (an abomination IMHO) is fine with me. 😉
Beer is good, but as you probably know, ginger beer is not more like beer than root beer is.
Ginger beer is ginger ale on steroids. Ginger Beer is to ginger ale as Guinness Stout is to Coors Lite. lol
I was able to stock up on Vernor’s at a Giant Eagle during a visit to Pittsburgh. It tasted as good as it did when I lived in Grand Rapids (the Michigan one) a long while ago.
Rumor is it’s now made in Texas, but you can’t get it in Texas.
Dr Pepper owns the Texas market.
And Vernors
I don’t think the Dr Pepper is a doctor I can keep with Obamacare. Mayor Mike doesn’t like him if he gets too big.
Wonder if Coca Cola is covered in the Bronze plan…. hmmm

I am still waiting for the collard greens 🙂
…which must be prepared in the proper way — i.e. boiled with lots of fatback (look it up if you don’t know what that is) and served with generous amounts of vinegar.
Don’t forget the okra!
But I have to say, I don’t think collard greens qualify as food porn, but then again… To each their own.
Fried okra (the only way to truly enjoy them), along with fried squash, fried chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes, gravy, sweet tea.
I don’t really miss the Southern cuisine, but I definitely know the ins and outs of what folks like to eat in NC. My arteries are probably glad that I no longer eat that way.
Still on the todo list is driving up to Hickory for my Country Ham with Redeye gravy dinner.
Wow, scratch that idea. Conover now seems to have only Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants. You can’t go home again.

There is a ‘war’ on everything traditional. While country ham might be a bad for certain people I support their right to eat it. For me, I do better on a low sodium level, but an occasional meal of Southern style cooking is nothing to worry over.
Spoon bread is real good with fried okra, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked butternut squash, hominy, fried chicken and sweet tea.
I predict we will see ‘sin taxes’ on salt, fats, sugar (and whatever else Big Brother deems as not allowed) within the next 5 years.
So will those food based bad food taxes have exemptions for religious or ethnic groups?
The FDA is forcing food manufacturers to reduce salt content “slowly” so people get used to it.
One method is replacing sodium chloride with potassium chloride. While potassium chloride does drain the sodium out of the bloodstream, it causes kidney damage, ulcers, and is very dangerous when the person is taking diuretics or ACE inhibitors, exactly the types of treatments a person with hypertension would be taking.

Call me crazy, but I think the tattoo on the side of his neck might hint at a motive.
okra? win free! 😉
From the Detroit area in addition to aforementioned the was/is Brays Burgers, or Greene’s in some suburbs and the Elias Bros. Big Boy and a host of really good Pizza places.
