If you have an ounce of Southern in you, you know the best way to wash down that Moon Pie is with an RC Cola

The clogging starts about 1 minute into the video

As a more or less lifelong southerner (with brief respites in Minnesota and Nevada), there are few things I dislike more than a Moon Pie. It does seem to be a southern thing, though. Might be the marshmallows that turn me off.

As for sweets, my diabetes warns me to stay away. I was born in Lufkin, Texas, home of a very famous treat…the Chick-o-Stick. Peanut butter crunchy goodness, as far as I can remember.

There is a YouTube video of Art Linkletter explaining how the Kola nut is used to make RC Cola. It’s a nut that grows in the forests of Nigera. It has a role similar to that of khat in Eastern Africa. The stimulant properties are integrated into Muslim social gatherings – the stimulant effect wards off hunger pangs.

No commercial colas use Kola nuts any more, now that we have the wonders of modern chemistry.

One Time in Cub Scouts we went to the RC bottler in Marlinton West Virginia. They showed how the washed the bottles (returns for deposits) How they were inspected and when new bottles came in every week.
Then the bottle going down the line and the RC cola injected into it and a cap sealing it.
It was pretty wild. Bottles were the tall 16oz ones, eight packs into cardboard packs.
You all remember returning them for deposit?
I guess people using them a spit-tunes made that go away.
    I like moon pies

As a teen I worked as a grocery bagger/stock boy. One of my daily duties (in addition to mopping the entire store at closing every night!) was to deal with the hundreds of returned soda bottles we received each day. Most of the time it was not too bad, but some people did not clean the bottles and I quickly learned that a drying cola takes on a super glue like consistency (this was back in the day when colas were still made with real sugar).

One side benefit of that job was that our manager let us have the contents of any beer kegs that were returned — so every Friday and Saturday night several of us workers and cashiers got together at an apartment for partial kegs of beer (which was sometimes near flat, but hey, we were teens and it was free beer! If you drank it fast enough, you hardly noticed how bland it was).

There was a video on YouTube for a while of the bottling plant for Rolling Rock beer showing the process and how they rinse bottles upside down and have metal detectors so they can prove the impossibility of the lawsuits claiming “I found […] in my bottle of beer. That plant in Latrobe PA has since closed.

I can watch videos of factories making stuff all day long. It’s so much taken for granted how stuff winds up at the store.

I grew up in Chattanooga and moon pies and Little Debbies were a weekly staple on our kitchen counter. I preferred a nice Frosty brand root beer in the glass bottle to the RC cola though…

I remember eating a Moon Pie and swigging on an RC cola. Mmmm-Good.
I also remember when Mountain Dew was only available in little, mom and pop backcountry stores.

Oh, forgot to mention that a Moon Pie is the commercialized version of Smores, you know, a toasted marshmallow squeezed between graham crackers with a Hershey’s chocolate bar in the middle, and that being the ‘real deal’ is way better.
