Change to sporting broadcasts in the directory

People who have been here a while know that very few sports programs are streamed – and usually when they are, it is a mistake. That’s true for pretty much all pro sports, and college sports once Sports Representation agencies like IMG sign a college to handle their media.

That being the case, why do I care? The reason is that in a large portion of the cases, the stations either bring down their stream during sports or throw on Dave Ramsey or Clark Howard “evergeen” tapes. This causes people to report either Broken Stream! or Wrong Program!, so I’ve built into the reporting mechanism the fact that the problem they are reporting may just be the station is airing sports (which the typical visitor would not realize, especially if it is not a station local to them that they hear “over the air”.

I also sort stations which preempt a talk show with sporting events lower in the list of available stations to reduce the chances of trying to listen to a talk show and then having to try again when you bump into sports.

The change going live today is to automate when the season starts and ends for each sports. What this means is the directory is now automatically calendar aware (it is already day of week aware – it only shows College Football on Saturdays, for instance).

For those of you a bit more sports literate, could you look over this list and see if you spot mistakes? The general idea is I’m setting the range at the earliest and latest the season can start/end. For the major sports, I have post season as a different “sport”, as the stations that carry normal season games do not necessarily have the rights to air the post season games (and vice versa).

  1. Art Stone says:

I just learned that IMG was sold to the legendary William Morris by Forstmann Little (where have I heard that name recently?) for $2.3 billion
