This was a “when”, not an “if”.
You know Scott Shannon from one of several places:
– host of the voice tracked True Oldies syndicated show
– cohost of the morning show on WPLJ-FM in New York City
– the smarmy announcer guy on Sean Hannity’s show (no longer heard on Cumulus)
The Dickeys spend money on nothing, especially people. Shannon is one of the last holdovers from the ABC Radio era (Mark Levin will be the last). There was no chance Cumulus was going to pay Shannon anything close to what he was making.
Bummer, the local radio had the oldies show. I guess they will get someone off the street for minimum wage.
Luckily the stock mart was ‘,,,to the Moon Alice” today. So happy days are here again.
Snow due here tomorrow, be-do be-do siren

Well the magic of voice tracking is true Oldies can keep playing 20 years after Scott Shannon is dead. I think he does a little bit of current material to try to hide the fact that it is mostly just a a computer playing the same songs over and over. There was some hint he may continue to be involved with the oldies thing. Shannon is 66 years old. Dial global has competing products. My guess, based on nothing, is Cumulus will give Shannon the True Oldies franchise and them drop it from their stations and let Shannon sell it where he can.
The market for doo wop is dying.
Don’t tell Joey Reynolds
“Elliot in the Morning” just got the boot from WOR-AM, a truly odd programming decision someone made.
Tom Taylor is floating the idea that Scott Shannon may be going to WOR. That would e an interesting “in your face” move.
The first thing the Dickey brothers did after taking control of Citadel/ABC was booted out the people in the San Francisco market with very long track records and impeccable reputations. I hope the rumor is true. Maybe he and Mark Simone will work together on a music oriented morning show 🙂
Hope it would keep Mark Simone away from the infomercials on radio and the PBS begathons.
I was really disappointed that he did infomercials. I guess living in New York costs money.
Scott Shannon starts Monday at WCBS-FM in New York City in direct competition with the former Cumulus owned WPLJ-FM. For a brief time, Shannon had been VP of programming at ABC/Citadel – he probably had enough clout to demand a contract without a non-compete.
CBS still understands that good talent in a major market quickly pay back their large salaries. Shannon has been around radio long enough he had to know the Dickey brothers would get to him eventually, since he makes more than minimum wage.
I’m not sure that a 66 year old doing oldies in New York City is suddenly going to draw 20 somethings to listen to radio, but it will cut costs for Cumulus!
How about a 66 year old playing “free form radio” in New York City that does draw 20 somethings both on SiriusXM and on noncommercial radio?

You make a good point – his show has 428 likes on Facebook
Damn! I’ll bet he has a ways to go to catch Joan Hamburg.
Once you catch Joan Hamburg, you’ll wonder why you wanted to
She is no hot dog.
I guess Shannon has cut new liners for Sean Hannity. Hannity works for Clear Channel exclusively now. Cumulus strikes me as the kind of folks who would sue Shannon and say they own his name.
Apple pushed an update to the “Scott Shannon’s True Oldies” App. The app is still connected to Cumulus. Cumulus has already indicated they are replacing the program in its syndication.
This raises a few interesting questions:
Does Cumulus have rights to continue to use Scott Shannon’s name? The stream itself doesn’t use his name.
If Scott Shannon created his own app, would Cumulus sue on the basis that Scott Shannon doesn’t own his own name? (it’s his real name, not a show biz name)
When John LeBarca was fired by Cumulus at WICC without notice or cause (other than John had a health “scare”), he and Cumulus got into a fight over John’s weekend “Italian House Party”. The show WAS John in the same sense the True Oldies channel is Scott Shannon – a genuine love of the music, personal friendships with the artists and a huge personal collection of the music and developing a loyal audience over many years.
I lived in the WICC Bridgeport CT area and regularly listened to John, including the Italian House Party. Unfortunately, I think John mishandled it, including putting me in the middle of his dispute asserting he owned a trademark on the name. John ultimately landed a job at the Cox radio stations closer to New York, which Cox gave away to a college after about a year. He then rented time on an obscure station and I’m not sure that show even ever made it to air. Protecting the name has no value if you aren’t using it.

John has landed at a nostalgia station on Lawn Guyland, which is where he started.
