Big changes at Salem Radio

* disclaimer – I am a stockholder in SALM

For years, I have been advocating changes to the Salem Talk Lineup – the Bennett, Gallagher, Prager, Medved, Hewitt lineup hasn’t changed since I started tracking programming schedules. They’re all getting old. Back before Salem stopped paying for ratings, most of their station were drawing less than 1% shares, SALM stays afloat by selling books and magazine subscriptions, something people under the age of 50 don’t buy.

Bill Bennett announced on air this morning that he is stepping aside effective April 4th. He is 72 years old. He is best known for heading the Department of Education under Ronald Reagan, and being Drug Czar under George HW Bush.

Hugh Hewitt (currently on 6-9 PM) will move to mornings. Hewitt is a lawyer. He is a young 59 years old. Since most of Salem’s talk stations are on AM, the 6-9 PM ET time is when the potential audience starts to drift away. No report who will replace Hewitt – perhaps they’ll run 3 hours of infomercials.

    It looks like the “fetching Mrs. Hewitt” will be making the trek eastward to Washington, D.C., as Hugh continues edging his way into the Beltway social structure. It should be a jolt to Bennett’s listeners. Although Bill doesn’t seem to have much of a problem with ‘big government’, his show was an easy listen, and was packed with callers that were intelligent, and really gave one a feel for what flyover country was thinking and feeling.

    I’m interested to see how Hewitt deals with the feel of his show in the morning slot. His bumper music is among the best ever, but closing with the “Last of the Mohicans” theme, may be better suited for 9pm, and not 9am. Having inside-guests like Lileks, and constant joking about the Cleveland Browns, I don’t expect will fly either. I have been drifting away from Hugh’s program for quite some time, because he was little more than a republican hack to me.

    From 6pm-9pm, the only choice now is Mark Levin, and who could step into that slot for Salem? Rusty Humphries?
