Cumulus Media to syndicate CBS Sports Radio Network

Press Release

Looking for Savage News on the Cumulus Website, I found that press release. January 2nd, 2013 – just in time for the really important football game whose name may not be said – CBS will launch its 24 hr/day, 7 day a week sports talk network. It will be carried on CBS’s current Sports Talk stations plus the Cumulus stations that are currently Sports Talk format – with the twist that Cumulus is in charge of distribution and advertising.

I was listening to the Dan Patrick show for a few minutes this morning. He said something to the effect of “we thank our 270 affiliates and all they have done for us, but stay tuned for a big, big announcement coming in the next few days..”

I wondered if this is related to the CBS All-Sports network?

Possibly – but could also be NBC / Dial Global.

Jim Rome is headed to CBS. I’m not sure one network could hold two egos.

I obliquely suggested the possibility that Fox Sports radio will fold. Clear Channel was originally underwriting it, but without official relationships with the Pro organizations, they don’t have access to coaches and players. Maybe two or three years ago, it imploded into mostly taking KLAC in LA and putting it on the satellite. They’ve been through 3 sets of morning hosts that Zi remember. They’re adrift without a rudder and now nobody rowing.

Who would clear channel pick up? Where Cumulus is switching to CBS, Clear Channel will probably pick up ESPN. But that’s all hypothetical. First we have to survive the end of the Mayan Calendar and Harold Camping’s latest end of the world prediction.

  2. I wonder if CBS plans to put its national format onto its new 101.9 FM signal, or put it on 660 AM and move The Fan from AM to FM.
