Bloat is back

My rant of the day…

If you are paying attention, I’ve been doing a lot of web page visits. They are proving another socialist truism – if you make something free or close to free, you will never have enough capacity as demand always rises to consume unused capacity.

I’m on a connection that is reliably about 24 Mb/sec, yet radio station web pages are getting obscenely slow. They keep adding more and more noise – autorunning videos, preloaded picture gallaries, polls, news headlines…

Someone mentioned GTMetrix in a comment thread – it measures the size and load times of a web page.

Admittedly my web site is based on the extreme 1990s dialup web of the past, but I’m also running from a residential cable TV connection.

It reports that if you load my main web page, it took .72 seconds (720 ms), made 9 requests and transferred 47.5k of data

Drudge Report
7.06s – 129 requests – 590 kb

Let’s wander to a few radio web sites

KOGO (Clear Channel)
5.54s – 141 requests – 2.13 MB of data

WABC (Cumulus)
5.17s – 136 requests – 1.94 MB

WIND (Salem)
14.39s – 113 requests – 1.88 MB

WCCO (CBS)
9.07s – 275 requests – 2.81 MB

And this is 2:30 am ET on Friday morning – it doesn’t get faster than this
