Waiting your turn in line

Son of Russian immigrants Michael “Savage” Wiener creates some more fractured American History tonight.

Since the immigration issue is heating up and is his central issue, it’s troubling that he repeats the notion that “our ancestors had to wait our turn in line” to become Americans.

Prior to 1921, there were no quotas limiting immigration into the United States. While there were restrictions at various times against people with diseases and attempts to limit immigrants of some ethnic groups, there was no “line”.

Progressive labor unions wanted quotas to limit the number of immigrants following World War one. Othes wanted to limit the immigration of Russian Jews (like Ayn Rand and Savage’s parents) fleeing the Soviet Union. Others were enamored with the Eugenics movement and wanted to “protect the gene pool”.

Most people who are now Americans came to America when anyone who could get here was welcomed. Of all the stories Savage has told, I have yet to hear him discuss the day his father became an American citizen. You would think that was an important day.
